Bartram's Country is an area located in Jasper County, SC, near Pocoteligo. It’s named for being the place where naturalist William Bartram, explored in the late 18th century. A good friend suggested I pull off the Coastal Highway 17 on the way to Florida to appreciate the swampy marshes. I anticipate a few paintings based on that stop.

Trees in a forest are unique individuals, but they’re also interdependent. I’ve found that the lives of Southerners tend to follow a similar pattern. This particular group of trees is in a flat, roadside area near Brevard, NC.

Inspired by the Congaree National Park. As a college sophomore, we studied the ecology of the Congaree. Little did I know that I would revisit this natural habitat, finding inspiration in the murky water and reaching trees. Hour by hour, the forest evolves. Creatures hidden among trees and underbrush inspire me to bring the canvas to life.

Right outside Edisto Beach, off Hwy 174, is Botany Bay. Nature has reclaimed this spot, once home to two plantations. Dark blue skies added to the eeriness of haunting ruins surrounded by wildlife and fossilized trees, making it quite the inspiration for this self-titled painting.

While on a painting trip to Provincetown, MA, I ventured by jeep on a bone-shaking ride past the famed artists' dune shacks and through the rugged dunes of the unspoiled Cape Cod National Seashore. The rough water and the natural shoreline from that expedition inspired this painting. Standing on the shore of the curving cape you could only see water and a tiny bit of shore.

This stand of trees in the Congaree National Park weathers together the rise and fall of the rivers. As a group, they reach majestically upward, but their roots are entwined beneath the soil. Their symbiotic growth makes them stronger together. When Florence & the Machine’s song, Stand By Me, played while I was painting, I knew at once this tree painting would be so named.

I wanted the painting to feel alive and slightly untamed. Bright color pushes through the darker earth tones the way wild growth breaks through marsh grasses and riverbanks.

March is the month that Peach trees really show off. I get so excited and inspired to capture the gnarly trees covered in pink blooms even though the weather is usually still chilly. These winding lines of trees on the hillside were at Fisher Farms which is not too far away.

Watching the sun set was a magical inspiration for this painting. This field in Georgetown County was part of 3,500 acres of historic rice fields. Along the SC Santee Delta, these fields had been naturalized, creating a protected ecological landscape perfect for hunting.
